Baby Update 13 weeks and 6 days
The baby is still growing rapidly. All of its distinct features, eyes, ears, toes, nose, have fully developed, but are still forming to fit its body correctly. Its ears might be closer to its neck and will slowly move upwards as its heard grows. Its intestines, which originally develop outside of the body, will start moving inside. Although its been growing a lot of the past three months, it is still only about 3 inches from crown to rump, about the size of a peach.
Mel and I went to our second doctors visit yesterday and got to hear the heartbeat again. A little slower this time at 165 beats per minute. The doctor said everything sounded good and told us that since we are now almost to the second week of the second trimester that chances of miscarriage have decreased greatly. We were told that at our next months appointment we would be asked about optional prenatal tests for fetal abnormalities including down syndrome. We will also be thinking about when to have a ultrasound done. Not all doctors perform ultrasounds as standard procedure anymore and insurace won’t cover it unless the doctor thinks it is necessary. We are both eager to find out the sex of the baby, but you can’t be sure to tell much about the baby until it gets a bit bigger, around 21 weeks. Lots of stuff to look forward to.
Stu has continued to handle the ailments of pregnancy very well. I can see her tummy starting to grow just a little. I’m still confused as to how women’s bodies can just shift shape as she is maintaining a contant weight during this change. Her appetite is definitely starting to pick up a bit, still waiting for the odd cravings to come though.
